What link was there between their religious beliefs and their rulers?
The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt had a very strong connection to their religion. In fact, it was believed that the Pharaoh represented the gods on earth. While he was alive, it was believed that the Pharaoh was Horus (patron god of Egypt), and when he died he became Osiris (god of the underworld). The Pharaoh was also the religious leader of Ancient Egypt, and it was his job to maintain Ma’at, or universal balance. A Pharaoh also had to keep the gods happy, hence the construction of all those monuments. Priests also had a powerful say in society, as people respected them in order to not offend the gods. Finally, the Pharaoh was blamed for all bad/good natural events, as these were believed to be actions of the gods. For instance, the flooding of the Nile depended on the Pharaoh, and people tried to please the Pharaoh so that he would make the river flood. The rulers of Ancient Egypt had strong ties to their religion.
