What value did their culture place on their writing?
In Ancient Egyptian culture, both writing and people who could write were well respected. Because writing was believed to be an invention of the gods, the people of Ancient Egypt valued it. Gods associated with writing like Thoth and Seshat were just as respected as the other gods, if not more so. Scribes were also well valued for their ability to read and write, and were often near the top class, sometimes even making it into the Pharaoh’s court (and in the case of Imhotep, becoming a god). One of the reasons scribes were so respected was not just because writing was associated with religion, but because being a scribe was one of the few ways in Ancient Egypt to move up the social class and people from lower classes respected this. As well as this, Ancient Egyptians believed in organisation and social structure, and writing was vital for this. Finally, scribes enjoyed a much richer lifestyle than most because of their ability to read and write. Ancient Egyptians valued the writing and writers of their time.
